Why WhatsApp photos print blurry, and how to collect the originals
The photo looked fine on the customer's phone. Printed at 8×10, it is soft and blotchy. The cause is usually the journey, not the camera.
Why it happens
To send photos quickly, chat apps usually resize and recompress images sent the normal way. The result looks fine on a small phone screen but has fewer pixels and less detail than the original. Exactly how much is lost depends on the app, its version and its settings — some apps offer an HD option or sending as a file.
It gets worse when a photo is forwarded several times, or when the customer sends a screenshot of a photo instead of the photo itself — a screenshot only has the pixels of the phone screen.
How to spot a compressed photo before printing
- Check the pixel size. A recent phone photo is usually several thousand pixels on the long side. If it is far smaller, it has probably been shrunk.
- Check the file size. An original phone photo is typically a few megabytes. A few hundred kilobytes is a warning sign.
- Zoom in to 100%. Look at hair, leaves and text. Blocky squares or smeared detail mean compression.
- Work out the PPI for the print size. See print resolution explained.
Four ways to get the original
- Ask the customer to send it as a document or file instead of as a photo. Most chat apps then send the file unchanged.
- Use the app's HD or original-quality option, if it has one, and check the result.
- Use an upload link that accepts original files from the phone's gallery. This also keeps each customer's photos together.
- Email or a cloud drive link, for customers who already use them.
Whatever the method, ask for the photo from the phone's gallery or camera roll — not a screenshot and not a copy saved from a chat.
When there is no original
Sometimes the only copy is the compressed one. Be honest: suggest a smaller print size, or show the customer a preview at the real size before printing. Sharpening and upscaling can help a little, but cannot bring back detail that was thrown away.
With PrintSimplify, every order gets its own upload link and QR code. Photos arrive in original quality inside the right order. See how it works.
