How the calculator works
- Fill scales the photo until it covers the whole print. PPI = the smaller of (pixel width ÷ print width) and (pixel height ÷ print height). Anything that sticks out is cropped.
- Fit shows the whole photo. PPI = the larger of the two numbers, and blank borders appear on two sides if the shapes differ.
- Orientation "Same as the photo" turns the print to match the photo — a landscape photo is compared with a landscape print.
- Pixels needed = print width and height in inches × 300.
What the ratings mean
- Excellent: 300 PPI or more.
- Good: 200–299 PPI.
- Acceptable: 150–199 PPI, for larger prints seen from a distance.
- Low: below 150 PPI.
These thresholds are common guidelines, not guarantees. A photo with enough pixels can still be out of focus, shaken or heavily compressed — always look at it at 100% too.
